Learn about Digital painting

Want to learn to make concept art but don't know where to start? This next entry in the Lifehacker Night School series will help you get your feet wet. Because the skillset is rooted in traditional drawing and painting, don't expect to be the next superstar concept artist overnight. Instead, think of this 101 course as an opportunity to get to know the tools. Over these five short lessons I'll show you what you need to get started on the path of digital painting.

Download the Software

Before you get started, you're going to need Adobe Photoshop – and the official website has a 30 day free trial. Once you're familiar with the basic principles, you may decide that Photoshop Elements ($99) or the GIMP ($0) is a better fit for your budget, but for this series I'll be using Adobe Photoshop CS5.
Used for a variety of graphic tasks, Photoshop is dense software filled with menus and options galore. Generally speaking, however, digital painting requires only a small fraction of these offerings. Knowing which parts to display and which parts to hide will make your challenge much easier! Let's begin by creating a new document.

When prompted with the new document dialog, enter the following settings to match those shown here.
Before we go any further, it's time to define a few things. In Photoshop terms, a palette is a free-floating window which contains information (A). When you open the window menu (B), you can reveal or hide the palettes. A check mark means that it's now visible. The vertical palette on the left side of the screen is called the "tool palette". I'll select the brush tool by clicking on the brush icon.

Tool Properties

Whenever you have a tool selected, the information shown in the top bar will change. This is called the Tool Properties. In this case, there are three different properties which modify the brush tool. If your Tool Properties bar looks different than mine, you might have a different tool active.
Near the bottom of the tool palette, you'll see two squares of color – potentially black and white. These are called the foreground and background color. The color on your brush is known as the 'foreground color'. If you want to change this color, click on the foreground square and it opens up the color picker.

Getting Set Up

Now that you know some of the basics of the interface, it's time to get set up for painting. The necessary palettes to have displayed are the following: Navigator, Layers, Tools. The Navigator will serve as your roadmap. It displays a thumbnail sized version of your canvas, and allows you to zoom and pan. The small and large mountain buttons control the zoom, and the red rectangle can be dragged around to pan your canvas when zoomed in. You can position these palettes wherever you like, but I like to keep them on the left side of my window. This layout works well for me because I am right handed.

Keyboard Shortcuts for Getting Around

Sometimes operating software feels like digging through a dense instruction manual. You're attempting to do a creative act, but getting bogged down by an endless sea of menus and pulldowns. What better way to speed up your painting than with keyboard shortcuts? These shortcuts* aren't very flashy, but they're worth learning before you progress any further.

Digital Capture

In the days of yore, there was video for TV and 35mm film for feature films. Period. Those days are gone forever. Video is still used for TV, but now it’s HD. And for feature films, there is still film, but now there is a long list of video and digital capture options that are being used in movie production today, and more coming every year.

There is even a new term for this the data-centric workflow which encapsulates the all-digital workflow from digital capture to disk to post-production to projection.
In this chapter we will sort out the various digital media and how they relate to visual effects composting for feature films

Photographing a feature film with a digital camera is now being referred to as “capture” instead of photographing or filming since there is no film involved. There are three classes of digital cameras that might be used to capture a movie and its visual effects elements: HD Video Cameras: some high-end HD video cameras such as the Sony Cine Alta and Sony 950 can capture 4:4:4 video at 1920 × 1080 and have been used on some feature films. Some have log data options.

Digital Cinema Cameras: these are very high-resolution cameras designed specifically for feature film work and the data-\centric workflow using log data. Examples are the Pavilion Genesis and the Thomson Viper.

The RED: this, of course, is the premier digital cinema camera and stands to become the dominant camera for film making. It is extremely high resolution with an outstanding dynamic range and uses standard 35mm film lenses. And the quality of the captured image has a major impact on its suitability for visual effects. Too often inexperienced production crews use equipment that is not suitable or is even maladjusted for visual effects

Art of Composting

A compositor is, first and foremost, an artist, so this chapter focuses on the art of compositing. There are two levels of artistic excellence. First is the achievement of competent photo-realism, the objective of every digital composite. But beyond replicating reality in a convincing manner, there is also artistic enhancement going beyond simply professionally assembling the elements provided and adding your own artistic panache to make the shot look cool. Good artistic design makes for good visual effects shots

Digital compositing can be defined as taking several disparate elements that were photographed separately and integrating them into a single shot such that the various elements appear to have been shot together at the same time under the same lighting with the same camera. This journey begins by color correcting the elements so that they appear to be together in the same “light space.” Then there are film and lens attributes that have to be made to match. Finally, the finished composite is sweetened by the addition of special operations designed to enhance realism and improve artistic appeal.

The single most important aspect of a convincing digital composite is color correcting the various layers to all appear to have been photographed together in the same light space. There are several aspects to color correcting and it is easy to chase your tail, so here we will walk through a methodical step-by-step procedure that teases the issues apart and tackles them one at a time. A methodical approach saves time and gives better results.

The first step in the color correction of a composite is for the background plate to be color corrected. This is often referred to as color grading and many visual effects facilities have a specific pipeline set up to ensure that the background plates for a related group of shots are all color graded similarly in order to maintain visual continuity. After the background is color graded the compositor adds

About VFX

Visual effects artists have taken illusions to previously unimaginable places over the years and have carried on the legacy of the many illusionists who went before them. One attribute that separates a traditional illusionist from his digital counterpart is secrecy. Whereas traditional magicians kept secrets to preserve the mystery of their tricks, the best visual effects artists I know are quick to break down their digital illusions and share them not only with other VFX artists, but the audiences as well.

VFX artists over the years, both in productions and in the classroom. To produce digital illusions, VFX artists’ primary skill is problem solving. Visual effects instructors must attain high levels of problem-solving ability, but they must also acquire the ability to pass their knowledge onto others.

Finding a VFX instructor is easy. Finding a great instructor with the ability to inspire and create production-ready artists with the needed skills often feels like a magic trick of its own Jon Gress is among the rare breed of VFX artists who can move seamlessly between problem solving on a production and imparting his experience in the classroom. I walked into the studio during the last few weeks of production and witnessed what looked to be chaos and a production that was out of control. It turns out, it was orchestrated chaos.

At the time, Jon was filming a few greenscreen pick-up shots of an actor floating off into space, directing artists working on several digital destruction shots, and fine-tuning the edit, among other things. It was fun watching how trivial he made the whole process look and how he effortlessly motivated the team of artists, even at the 11th hour of production, when most teams would be discouraged.

It’s no real surprise that some of those artists went on to work at studios like Digital Domain, WETA Digital, Zoic, Pixomondo,The Asylum, Cinesite, Prime Focus, and Walt Disney Animation Studios. A couple years later, I recommended that the Digital Animation and Visual Effects School at Universal Studios hire Jon as the VFX instructor. The school was in the process of retooling its curriculum and needed someone with Jon’s experience to come in and help enhance the training the school was providing. Shortly after Jon came on board, the quality of the work being produced by the students increased exponentially.

More importantly, the students had a newfound love of the art of visual effects Jon brings a contagious energy to anything he is involved with, and he is passionate about the craft of filmmaking. Couple that with his hands-on experience with and knowledge of VFX and his ability to problem-solve and you have the skillset needed to train the next generation of digital artists. Over the years, Jon has helped to keep movie magic alive and thriving by training hundreds of artists who have gone on to work on everything from summer blockbuster feature films to award-winning television series, and more.

When I heard that Jon was going to be writing a book on visual effects, I was excited that his knowledge would finally be bottled and find its way into the hands of more artists. Throughout the pages of this book, Jon introduces you to the magic of visual effects and imparts his knowledge so that you can create your own digital illusions. Your audience will walk away knowing that what they saw couldn’t have been real—but they will still believe.

Animation Principal

The principles are:
1. Timing
2. Ease In and Out (or Slow In and Out)
3. Arcs
4. Anticipation
5. Exaggeration
6. Squash and Stretch
7. Secondary Action
8. Follow Through and Overlapping Action
9. Straight Ahead Action and Pose-To-Pose Action
10. Staging
11. Appeal
12. Personality
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Timing and Spacing
Timing and spacing in animation is what gives objects and characters the illusion of moving within the laws of physics. Timing refers to the number of frames between two poses. For example, if a ball travels from screen left to screen right in 24 frames that would be the timing. It takes 24 frames or one second (if you’re working within the film rate of 24 frames per second) for the ball to reach the other side of the screen.

Timing-and-Spacing
Add caption
The spacing refers to how those individual frames are placed. For instance, in the same example the spacing would be how the ball is positioned in the other 23 frames. If the spacing is close together, the object moves slower, if the spacing is further apart the object moves faster.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Squash and Stretch
Squash and Stretch is what gives flexibility to objects. There’s a lot of squash and stretch happening in real life that you may not notice; in animation this can be exaggerated. For instance, there’s a lot of squash and stretch that occur in the face when someone speaks, because the face is a very flexible area.

Squash-and-Stretch

The easiest way to understand how squash and stretch work is to look at a bouncing ball. As the ball starts to fall and picks up speed, the ball will stretch out just before impact, and as the ball impacts the ground, it squashes, and as it takes off again it stretches.
Squash and stretch can be implemented in many different areas of animation, like the eyes during a blink or when someone gets surprised or scared, their face squashes down, and stretches. Squash and stretch is a great principle to utilize to exaggerate animations and add more appeal to a movement.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Anticipation
Anticipation is used in animation to set the audience up for an action that is about to happen. An easy way to think about this is that if a person needs to move forward, they first must move back. For example, if a character is about to walk forward, they might move back slightly, this not only gets their momentum up, but it also lets the audience know this person is about to move. Or if a character is reaching for a glass on a table, they might move their hand back, before moving it forward.

Anticipation

Not only is anticipation needed to prepare the audience, but it’s also required to sell believable movements. For example, before a baseball player pitches they first need to move their entire body and arm back to gain enough energy, and before a parkour enthusiast leaps of a ledge they first must bend their knees to prepare for the jump. Imagine if these actions had no anticipation – they wouldn’t be believable.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Ease in Ease Out
As any object or person moves or comes to a stop there needs to be a time for acceleration and deceleration. Without ease in and ease out (or slow in slow out), movements become very unnatural and robotic. For example, as a car starts from a stop, it doesn’t just reach full speed in an instant, it first must accelerate and gain speed. As it comes to a stop it doesn’t go from sixty to zero in the blink of an eye, if it did, it would be extremely uncomfortable. Instead, it slowly decelerates until it reaches a complete stop.

Ease-in-Ease-out

The same must be accomplished in an animation, and the easiest way to accomplish ease in and ease out is to utilize the principle of spacing. As a character stands up from a sitting position the spacing will be closer together at the start, so they ease into the movement, and as they stand up, they will ease out of the movement. Without this acceleration and deceleration of actions everything would be very abrupt and jerky.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Follow Through and Overlapping Action
Follow through and overlapping action can be considered two different principles, but they’re still closely related.
Follow through is the idea that separate parts of the body will continue moving after the character has come to a stop. For example, as a character comes to a stop from a walk, every part of the body won’t stop at the exact same time, instead, the arms may continue forward before coming to a settle. This could also be articles of clothing that continue to move as the character comes to a stop.

Follow-Through

Overlapping action is very similar in that it means different parts of the body will move at different times. For example, if a character raises their arm up to wave, the shoulder will move first, and then the arm, and the elbow and hand may lag behind a few frames. You may have also heard this referred to as “drag” or “lead and follow” You can even see an example of overlapping action in something like a blade of grass, the base moves first, and the rest of the grass follows behind at different rates, giving you that waving motion.
In real life, everything moves at different speeds and at different moments in time, and that is why follow through and overlapping action is so important for capturing realistic and fluid movement.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. Arcs
Everything in real-life typically moves in some type of arcing motion, and in animation you should adhere to this principle of arcs to ensure your animation is smooth and moves in a realistic way. The only time something would move in a perfectly straight line is if you’re trying to animate a robot, because it’s unnatural for people to move in straight lines.
Arcs

For example, if a character is turning their head, they will dip their head down during the turn creating an arcing motion. You also want to ensure the more subtle things move in arcs as well, for example the tips of the toes should move in rounded arcing motions as the character walks.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. Exaggeration
Exaggeration is used to push movements further to add more appeal to an action. Exaggeration can be used to create extremely cartoony movements, or incorporated with a little more restrain to more realistic actions. Whether it’s for a stylized animation or realistic, exaggeration should be implemented to some degree.
Exaggeration

If you have a realistic animation you can use exaggeration to make a more readable or fun movement while staying true to reality. For example, if a character is preparing to jump off a diving board you can push them down just a little bit further before they leap off. You can also use exaggeration in the timing as wall to enhance different movements or help to sell the weight of a character.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8. Solid Drawing
In 2D Animation, solid drawing is about creating an accurate drawing with volume and weight, and thinking about balance, and the anatomy in a pose. With 3D animation, animators are less likely to rely on their drawings, but the idea of solid drawing is just as important.

Solid-Drawing

wing you need to think about how you pose out your 3D character rig, ensuring there is correct balance and weight in the pose, as well as a clear silhouette. You also want to avoid what is called “twinning,” which basically means the pose you have created is mirrored across to the other side.
For example, the character may have both arms on their hips or both hands in their pockets. This creates a rather boring and unappealing pose. Making sure you implement the principle of solid drawing into your posing will ensure you avoid this issue.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9. Appeal
This principle can really come down to adding more appeal in many different areas of your animation, such as appeal in posing. However, the most obvious example is appeal in the character design, you want to have a character that the audience can connect to or relate to. A complicated or confusing character design can lack appeal.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10. Straight Ahead and Pose to Pose
Straight ahead and pose to pose refers to the two different techniques for how you go about animating. With straight ahead it’s a very spontaneous and more of a linear approach.
Straight-Ahead-and-Pose-to-Pose
Add caption
You’ll create each pose or drawing of the animation one after the other. For example, if you’re animating a character jumping in the air you would create the pose where he’s standing, the next where he is beginning to kneel down, the next would be him completely crouched, and so on. You’re really working through the animation as you’re going.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
11. Secondary Action
Secondary action refers to creating actions that emphasize or support the main action of the animation; it can breathe more life into an animation and create a more convincing performance.

Secondary-Action

It’s important to remember that the secondary action should typically be something subtle that doesn’t detract from the main action happening, and can be thought of as almost a subconscious action. For example, a character talking to another character in a waiting room, the two of them talking would be the main action, and if that character began tapping their foot nervously, that would be the secondary action.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12. Staging
Staging is how you go about setting up your scene, from the placement of the characters to the background and foreground elements and how the camera angle is set up. The purpose of staging is to make the purpose of the animation unmistakably clear to the viewer. This could be ensuring the camera is set up in a way to communicate the characters expression clearly, or setting up two different characters so that both of them are easily viewed from the specific angle.
You want to keep focus on the purpose of the shot and what you want to communicate so the audience doesn’t become confused.
Staging

Now that you know the meaning and purpose behind all of the principles of animation, be sure to implement these 12 key principles into all of your animations, and you’ll be sure to create stunning work!
